The Great Minnesota Get-Together

My friends from Blog Around the World are making a stop in Minnesota today. Welcome, you guys, and thanks, Debbie, for giving everyone directions!! It's the perfect day to get here for a sneak preview of our State Fair. I sure hope you've got your walking shoes on. And that you're HUNGRY!

There is SO much to do! Ride the rides at the midway,

visit the dairy barn to see the butter sculptures of "Princess Kay of the Milky Way" and her attendants,

visit the birthing barn to see the baby animals, watch the parade, and see the latest tractors on machinery hill (ya, you betcha!). You should stay into the evening to catch a concert at the grandstand--but better yet, this year Garrison Keillor is doing a Prairie Home Companion show. If you want to understand Minnesotans, you seriously shouldn't miss it. (But if you can't stay for that, you must read Lake Wobegon Days. You can get it on audio, probably with a MN accent, Lula!)

If our fair is known for one thing, though, it's all of the foods you can buy on a stick.

I did a search and got 71 results of stands that sell them, and some of those sell more than one item. Including several varieties of cheesecake and deep fried candy bars. And how about spaghetti and meatballs on a stick? OK. Maybe not. But save room for my favorite, the Tom Thumb Donuts (sans the stick).  Just thinking about them is making my mouth water!

Well there is really tons more to do, but let's just wrap it up with a trip down the giant slide. Grab a kid (or a grandpa), and let's go!

Hear this song playing in the background:

"Our state fair is a great state fair!
Don't miss it, don't even be late!
It's dollars to donuts at our state fair,
It's the best state fair in our state!"

That was for you, Hot Tub Lizzy, and I know you're singing along, even as you are playing one of my favorite Minnesotan games! (And I'm sure you're about ready to hop a plane to get here in time for the fair. I will pick you up at the airport this evening. The guest room is ready.  You can help me make some lefse while we are catching up.)

Now of course Minnesota has plenty to offer on any given day. We're the Land of 10,ooo Lakes, which, in true Minnesota fashion, is an understatement. We're home to the Mall of America, Lake Superior, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, as well as the Golden Gophers, and a team for your favorite sport, whatever that might be, including curling. Not to mention winters that never end.  So you can go ice fishing to your heart's content.

Well, I know you've got other stops to make, but I hate to see you go. I hope you'll come back when you can stay longer. Bring a sweater. On a stick.

  1. Great stuff! Who knew Minnesotans were so enthralled with food on a stick! I love that slide, that was one of my favorite things about going to the fair as a kid. Thanks for bringing up some great memories.

  2. Oh, I love the color of your blog! :) Butter sculptures!!! I never heard of such a thing. That's probably more butter than I could eat in one sitting. Probably.

  6. Thanks for posting! I came to you from Debbie's site... and I was excited about MN because my husband is from there...and he is ALWAYS talking about the MN fair and how we have to go sometime. We live in Hungary so we don't get home often...but it would be fun to go with our boys sometime. I loved hearing about the items deep fried on a stick...my father in law and husband are always talking about that. What a riot!

  7. Oh my goodness, that fair is amazing! The Mall of America is on my wish list of places to visit, I'll have to time my visit so I can experience the MN state fair also!

Here from BATW, congrats on being featured. Have fun!!

  8. Hello neighbor,(from the state next door)

I will miss the fair but am going to enjoy the Renaissance soon. Where I can enjoy some of that food on a stick.

  9. I know Paula Deen is from Savannah, but it seems she should be an honorary Minnesotan (is that the right term?) during your state fair so she can have a butter statue, too. Thanks for the tour. You really captured the spirit of the fair. That photo of the midway is so vibrant.

  10. I grew up with my dad listening to "The Prairie Home Companion" on NPR. I love it!!! In fact I love it so much I had to buy the book, "tales from lake wobegone". The State Fair looks like fun! The butter sculptures have inspired me to try my hand at a few artsy-fartsy things....lol!

Great Blog - and thanks for the "tour" of minnesota!

  17. Does every state fair do butter sculptures and I'm just ignorant? I had never heard of them before I moved to Iowa .. and I still think it's totally creepy having heads and cows made out of the stuff.

p.s. love your blog colors! just lovely :o)

  18. I'm terrified of height and oh my that slide scares me. I would love to visit the Mall of America I've heard it's not hard to get lost there. That would be ok with me though I live to shop.

thanks for having me. I'll be back.

  20. Tracy -- congrats on your tour stop today!! I'm actually going to be in your great state next week for work. I get there several times a year and always love my time there -- except of course when my nose freezes and falls off!! ;-) We have a plan to visit the fair one evening after our meetings are over and something on a stick is on my to do list! Save some for me!!

  21. Don't let Paula Deen near the butter sculpture. Think about it though, that's probably not even close to the total amount of butter she's used in all of her years cooking. I wonder how big that sculpture would be? And when you said birthing barn, it reminded me of the redhead's birth. Including me, 7 people were present and all focused on my tootie. YIKES!

  22. Well, Hey There, Bloggy Buddy! Checking in from across the Mighty Mississippi in Wisconsin! I'm actually a BIG Minnie-sota fan, except when U. Minn plays the Badgers in football! Our nephew was married in Minneapolis a couple of years ago, and we actually went to both the State Fair AND Mall of America. A grand time was had by all. My daughter still dreams of moving to Minneapolis and pretending she's Mary Tyler Moore. For now, though, she's gonna have to settle for the picture we took of her throwing her hat in the air in front of Dayton's!

  23. Greetings from BATW and Texas! It's nice to visit Minnesota :-)

  24. Well, Hello, Minnesota! My in-laws are from nearby Wisconsin, so I'm pretty familiar with your Great State, but especially the Minneapolis Airport! BIL and family live in Chippewa Falls, so it's much closer to take a flight to your neck o' the woods and then drive out to see him. I've even been to the State Fair! Isn't Blogging Around the World fun? Come by to see me in Virginia some time!

  25. That looks like so much fun! I love fairs and the idea of anything on a stick sounds good considering my favorite food (corndogs) only exist on a stick (I like to ignore those little mini corndogs with no stick...the stick is half the fun).

    Thanks for the great tour!!

  26. Stopping by from BATW... I hope you are having fun today. Congrats on being a featured blogger! I love fairs, ours is next week. I don't think we have butter sculptures though!

  27. Stopping by from BATW. I love fairs and yours looks amazing! Sign me up for a corndog and cheescake on a stick anyday!

  28. Oh, ladies, this is amazing! THANK YOU!! I need to tell you one thing that I forgot. If you are wanting your food on a stick to be a corn dog, well this is exactly how it all got started. BUT, you must only buy a PRONTO PUP. There are imitations, but do NOT fall for them. They are not the real thing.

  29. Stopping in from BATW. I live about 10 miles from the SD - MN border so I've been there quite often. I've never been to your fair though. Looks like fun! I recently watched a show on the Food Network that featured the MN fair and all the food on a stick!

  30. I was not going to go to our fair this year, but I think you changed my mind:} I might even buy an elephants ear. I do love going, don't do the rides but enjoy all of the exhibits.
Thanks for showing us around your fair. I will tell you if ours is as great.
Congratulations on being a featured blogger. Visiting you was great fun. Am going to try the Cowboy Caviar soon.

  35. Greetings as I pass through on my BATW! How fun your fair seems! Seems like you might need more than one day to see it all, though.

I love your header and what you have written there. It was actually an encouragement to me this morning. Thank you. I'm collecting "souvenirs from the journey"! :-)

  46. Hi! Stopping by from BATW for a visit, and so glad I am just in time for the Fair! I will be looking for a few of my favorites - hot dog on a stick and a cherry lemonade,... and any sweet potato fries by chance? Oh, and definitely going on that slide, too. The Fair looks likes so much fun, really wish I could be there AND shop at the Mall of America! -- Christine

Thanks for the tour...I've truly enjoyed my visit today!

  49. Woo! Your fair looks awesome! We have a butter sculpture at ours too! I'm actually taking my kiddo tomorrow - our fair is about 90 minutes away from our town, but totally worth the trip.

Growing up (and going to the NJ State Fair as a 4-Her every year), my favorite food-on-a-stick was the Korean BBQed beef. Mmmmmm. Gotta love that Fair Cuisine - just not too close to when you have to go on the Tilt-A-Whirl (or was that the Tilt-n-Hurl?) with your kid over on the midway....

Cheers and enjoy your BATW day! I'm late at checking out everyone's blogs today (barely is still today) but I'll be back when I'm more awake! :)

Thanks for the intro. to Minnesota! Hope you loved your BATW day!

  53. Howdy neighbor! From your neighbor to the south...

I love the Twin Cities - one of the best zoos and best museums in the country!

Although you know what I love most about MN??

It's the one place on earth that snows more than IA!
    ha!

  58. I gotta admit, the only place I have been in Minnesota is MSP, the airport, on a NWA stopover to Winnipeg, Orlando, Austin or NY.

    Sad...but I will someday visit this Land-o-lakes.

  59. I love fairs! New England is so small we have 1 for all 6 states. What could be better than food on a stick?
